About the School

Mr. Sibdas Chakravarti began his illustrious academic career in Goethals Memorial School, Kurseong as a Senior Chemistry teacher in 1962. He was extremely popular amongst his colleagues and students and enjoyed tremendous success as a teacher during his 35 years tenure at Goethals.
It was during his teaching years; he conceived the idea of starting a primary school with the sole motive of imparting quality education in the Darjeeling Hills. With modest means and a humble beginning with just three students in 1973 and complimented by his wife, Mrs. Jennifer Chakravarti’s efforts, Sunshine School, Kurseong, scaled great heights by becoming the most sought after primary boarding school in North Bengal and Sikkim, attracting students from neighbouring states and Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
His educational endeavours led him to further start another school, at the Secondary level, in Siliguri. St. Michael’s School was thus established in 1999. In less than two decades, St. Michael’s School, has emerged as the frontrunner, amongst schools in the region, with academic and co-curricular performances that stand second to none.
A true academician and the founding father of two schools, Mr. Sibdas Chakravarti’s vision and perseverance, has benefited generations of students in their quest for success in their respective lives.
Today, Mr. Chakravarti, is the Director of St. Michael’s School, Siliguri, ever ready to share his priceless experiences of more than five decades, with the same commitment and zeal to contribute to society and the nation as a whole.
Carrying his legacy forward into the new millennium, his son Mr. Robin Chakravarti (Deputy Director, Boys’ Wing) and ably assisted by his wife, Mrs. Rangana Chakravarti (Vice Principal, Boys’ Wing), since 2002, have continued with the same drive, passion and determination in making St. Michael’s further grow from strength to strength. With the ever-evolving educational environment, they have been open to embracing modern methods to enhance the teaching-learning process, something pivotal to any institute. Their approach in encouraging pupils to experience a wide range of academic subjects and extra-curricular activities, all of which helps pupils to discover areas where they can flourish and excel has been the highlight of their approach. Their efforts have gone a long way in epitomizing St. Michael’s as an ideal boarding school, paving the way for a future of its pupils, to be equipped and challenged to achieve excellence, and be inspired to contribute to a more just and equitable world
